On a more positive note, I had an amazing birthday this year. My fifth graders planned a surprise party for me. Well, it wasn't a complete surprise (one of the little darlings spilled the beans the week before), but I was really shocked at what they were able to put together. In the morning, no one even mentioned it was my birthday; they were all giving me sideways glances and grinning so I knew that they knew, but I played along with them. We carried on the morning as usual. Then for lunch, they all left and another teacher took me downstairs "to talk". At this point, I really don't know how they managed to pull it off, but they all snuck back up to my room, decorated the whole thing, and were waiting to surprise me. After the break I went back upstairs and found them all hiding in the dark. When I walked in the room, they screamed HAPPY BIRTHDAY! and covered me in snow spray and confetti. They had party poppers, streamers, posters, everything. Then I walked to the back and saw three giant chocolate cakes, muffins, snacks, candy, drinks, everything. They borrow instruments from the music teacher so they were all playing the drums and singing to me. It was a blast. They were so excited. Needless to say, we didn't do much for the rest of the day, which of course they loved as well. :) I even got presents--two purses, a teddy bear, a photo album, and a silver mirror. It really was one of the best birthday parties I've ever had!
